Crafted With Love: The Soul of Handmade Rattan - We asked the Weavers

Each piece in our collection is a testament to the art of basket weaving, passed down through generations of families who infuse every creation with attention, care, and love. Our rattan treasures originate from the agricultural heartlands, where weaving not only complements the cyclical rhythm of farming but also provides stable employment and income for artisans and their communities. A glimpse into the devotion poured into every basket is captured in a video showcasing the weaving of a large family-sized basket—a process that encapsulates days of meticulous handiwork.

For an adept weaver, crafting such a basket spans approximately five days, while those newer to the craft may spend up to seven days, excluding the additional hours dedicated to sanding and refining each piece to perfection.

Our workshop, set amidst the serene landscapes of the Irrawaddy region near Yangon, Myanmar, is where these intricate designs come to life. Even the simplest of items, like a placemat designed to grace dining tables, demands a day’s labor from our skilled artisans. The creation of larger, more elaborate pieces like laundry baskets can extend from 7 to 10 days, influenced by the complexity of the design and the weaver's expertise.

Highlighting the human touch behind our rattan pieces, we share insights from Ma Nyein, a cherished member of the Rattan Island family, on her weaving journey:

Q: How did you begin weaving baskets?

A: Growing up in a farming family, we turned to basket weaving during the growing season’s downtimes. It’s a practice embedded in our daily lives, providing supplementary income while our crops mature.

Q: Do your creations find a place in your daily life?

A: While we utilize some items traditionally, many are adapted for an international audience. For instance, our local trays and storage pots have been reimagined by Rattan Island as global household staples.

Q: Are there items you craft but don’t use personally?

A: Yes, certain modern designs, like magazine holders, don’t feature in our daily routines. Though I might not grasp every item's intended use, they are crafted in collaboration with Rattan Island, meeting a global demand.

Q: What does basket weaving mean to you?

A: It's more than a craft; it's a lifeline. It enables me to contribute to my family’s income, ensuring my children’s education and future opportunities.
